Everything will be awesome when you’re part of the team! Animal Logic – the studio that brought you The LEGO Movie – is looking for a Pipeline TD (Compositing & Lighting). The Pipeline TD (Compositing & Lighting) will be responsible for varying levels of pipeline troubleshooting, user support, technical direction, lighting/output tool development and front-end tool development. They should be able to work closely with the Lighting and R&D teams to ensure a standardised approach. This is a fulltime, contract role that reports to the Lighting Supervisor and Artist Management.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Understand the visual requirements for the film, and design procedures, techniques and tools that will enable these to be met
  • Assist lighting, compositing and matte painting artists with day to day issues and glitches; escalating issues when necessary
  • Assist in the planning and identification of required assets, tools, and processes to support lighting, compositing and matte painting requirements and R&D standards
  • Liaise with the R&D team to ensure compliance with current internal best practices
  • Provide input to the shading department to ensure that the requirements of surfacing and lighting are met in all shading development
  • Maintain a clean and accessible facility pipeline across multiple shows at the same time
  • Take responsibility for the optimisation of the workflow of the department
  • Understand the processes of other departments (eg. surfacing, assembly), and provide input to maximise efficiency and quality
  • Create and update documentation that supports the lighting, compositing and matte painting processes
  • Provide training to artists on new tools and pass on knowledge to the team and other crew as required


  • 4 + years’ experience on feature films, TV and/or animated feature
  • 4 + years’ experience developing tools and supporting artists in a production environment
  • An ability to quickly acquire a working understanding of both off-the-shelf and proprietary software tools
  • Experience developing in C++, MEL, OCIO, Python and/or Blink
  • Comprehensive understanding of 3D tools in Nuke and 3D matrices
  • Thorough understanding of compositing and colour theory
  • Advanced level of understanding of 3D packages (Maya) and rendering technology (PrMan/Arnold) and Lighting principles
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritise and problem solve; balancing quick turnaround with long term quality
  • Strong communications skills with the ability to work collaboratively within a team environment
  • Degree or equivalent working experience in animated film, Computer Science, Design, Engineering, Maths or Physics
  • English written and oral communication skills and the ability to connect with a wide variety of personalities
  • Experience as a production artist is a plus

Salary range CAD$88 – 120k and extended medical benefits. In addition, we include a comprehensive benefits package with paid vacation time, extended medical and dental, AD&D, LTD and Life insurance. We are based in Sydney, LA and now Vancouver within the creative precinct of Yaletown. Production on our first Vancouver-based animated feature has commenced with more animated features in the pipeline. Our business and work location for this role is 840 Cambie Street, Vancouver.
