Animal Logic is looking for a Pipeline TD (Lighting) who will develop and build upon the Lighting pipeline and systems. The Pipeline TD (Lighting) should be prepared to write helper and pipeline tools to support the lighting team and their process. They will be responsible for varying levels of pipeline troubleshooting, user support, technical direction and lighting/output tool development. This is a fulltime, contract role that reports to the Lighting Supervisor and Artist Management.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Understand the visual requirements for the film, and design procedures and techniques that will enable these to be met
  • Provide solutions to visual problems through existing tools or by leading development of new tools
  • Assist Artists with day to day issues and glitches and eventually escalating those issues through the right channels when they aren’t immediately addressable
  • Understand the processes of adjoining departments (eg. surfacing, assembly) and provide input where required to maximise efficiency and quality
  • Implements strategies/efficiencies in the use of disk space and/or render requirements
  • Provide input to the shading department to ensure that the requirements of surfacing and lighting are met in all shading development
  • Maintaining a clean common facility pipeline (tools, automation, practices) across multiple shows at the same time
  • Communicate and promote repeatable, pipeline based workflows that will ensure data security and efficiency throughout the whole production
  • Identify and spec department software requirements; discuss these with RnD leads and distribute them to internal software TD’s
  • Ensure all software development tasks are clearly articulated to the Software Development Manager and all software conforms to facility standards
  • Creating and updating documentation that supports the Lighting processes
  • Establish close partnership with Lighting staff and other TD groups
  • Show an understanding to develop junior talent and be prepared to pass on knowledge to all crew as required


  • 4 + years’ experience on feature films, TV and/or animated feature
  • 4 + years’ experience in CG or VFX production
  • Experience developing in Python, C++ or MEL
  • Experience in the following software: Maya, Python, Nuke, PrMan/Arnold or other industry standard renderer
  • Computer Science, Design, Engineering, Maths or Physics Advanced level of understanding of 3D packages and rendering technology and Lighting principles
  • Thorough understanding of compositing and colour theory
  • Ability to multi-task, efficiently organise and prioritise work across multiple areas
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment
  • Excellence in problem solving and balancing quick turnaround with long term quality
  • An ability to quickly acquire a working understanding of both off-the-shelf and proprietary software tools
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively work and communicate in English

Salary range CAD$88,000 – $120,000 and extended medical benefits. We are based in Sydney, LA and are now very excited to be establishing a presence in Vancouver within the creative precinct of Yaletown.  Production on our first Vancouver-based animated feature commenced in January 2016 with more animated features in the pipeline. Our business and work location for this role is 840 Cambie Street, Vancouver.

Animal Logic recently completed production on Peter Rabbit, and is currently in production on The LEGO® Movie Sequel (2019). In 2017, Animal Logic completed production on The LEGO® Ninjago Movie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and Alien: Covenant.
