Today, VFX is found across the entire film industry. From action epics to quiet, character-driven drama—the tools provide creators with an unrivalled ability to realise their vision. But there’s one genre in which VFX has its closest ties—science fiction. From Star Wars to Oats Studios, sci-fi is perhaps the most beloved playground of VFX artists the world over, as it’s a genre founded at the intersection of imagination and technology.

Drawing inspiration from the legacy of VFX in the genre, India-based VFX Pick Studio are excited to be showcasing the methods/techniques used in their latest sci-fi short “The First Supper” in conference at this year’s edition of FMX in Stuttgart, Germany—running from 23-26 April 2024.

A Vignette of The First Supper
Aliens, flying saucers and the post-apocalypse; The First Supper cuts to the chase frontloading impressive sci-fi visuals alongside a dynamic, pacey narrative. Conceptualised and entirely orchestrated by the 200-person team at VFX Pick, the studio took this unique opportunity to expand its usual workflow, integrating AI-powered tools throughout development.

In the early stages, Midjourney was carefully guided to bolster the ideation process—taking the team from idea to concept documentation far quicker than traditional methods while introducing some exciting new elements in the process. These concepts were then realised through Wonder Dynamics for Mocap and Cascadeur was further used for Mocap Clean-up and Animation Enhancement. The industry standards such as Maya and Houdini were also used before being brought into Nuke and Unreal Engine.

Thorough pre-viz and planning concluded, the team were ready for production. Shooting on location at a beach for two days before concluding the production with one further day on a chroma sound stage.

Then, it was time to get down to work. Pulling together all the elements, refining the look and adding the VFX spice that makes the film pop.
